Egypt Art - frequently asked questions about Egyptian Art

In response to the many questions we have received about our Ancient Egyptian paintings from customers and visitors, we offer the following information:

Are your prints copies of real Ancient Egyptian Art? No. So far as we are aware our Art is completely original and not based on any pre-existing Ancient Egyptian artwork.

What do you mean by "original"? Our Egyptian Paintings are completely original works of art inspired by the Artists' life-long study of Ancient Egypt.

What is the "Canon of proportions"? A series of natural laws and principles formulated many thousands of years ago by the Master-artists of Ancient Egypt. These laws embraced many principles, such as sacred geometry, colour harmony, anatomy and proportional metrology.

Where can I find out more about the "Canon"? So far as we are aware, only one book has attempted to reconstruct some aspects of the Canon. This was written by Erik Iverson and Yoshiaki Shibata under the title "Canon and Proportions in Egyptian Art" and published in the UK by Aris and Phillips Limited in the 1960's. We are not sure if it is still obtainable.

When were your Ancient Egyptian paintings produced? Between 1980 and 1990.

Can I buy the original paintings from which your prints are reproduced? No. Some of the originals are in private hands, others are held in a special collection on behalf of the Artists.

Can I commission an original Ancient Egyptian Painting? Yes. The artists have undertaken several commissions for private buyers of Ancient Egyptian Art over the years. If you wish to commission an Egyptian painting please write to us (not email!) and we will forward your request to the Artists for their consideration.

Have the artists produced other Egyptian paintings you are not showing? Yes. Whether or not they will be reproduced in the future depends entirely upon the response we get to to the twelve we have already published.

Who are the Artists? A small group of individuals who have come together to re-create the genuine art of the early 18th Dynasty and before for the benefit of those who can appreciate it.

Why do the artists wish to remain anonymous? Because Ancient Egyptian artists were themselves anonymous. To read our artists' published answer to this question, click here.

What was the purpose of Egyptian Art? The artists' invariable answer to this question is: "to inspire a deeper appreciation of the wonders of Creation and the love and goodness of the Creator". We are well aware that this may not be the prevailing view nor the view of professional Egyptologists, but we are in no doubt that Egyptian Art was essentially symbolical in expression and sacred in origin.
