Ancient Egyptian Lotus Pool
Water, fish and flowers were all important natural symbols in Ancient Egypt which revealed the mysteries of creation, reincarnation and resurrection as taught in the Temple schools. Fish were also symbols of the knowledge which the Wise seek in the 'Waters of Life', whether that 'life' is lived on earth or in 'heaven'. Lotus flowers were especially loved by the Ancient Egyptians, not only for their delicate beauty and unforgettable scent, but also because they were symbolical of the transformation of the soul. Indeed, we may say that Nature is the greatest book of Wisdom ever written, within whose leaves we may find the answers to the greatest Truths of life.
There is not a single flower that in its geometrical perfection, habits of growth and sublime beauty, does not reveal the signature of its Divine Creator in every part. Tennyson knew this when he wrote: "Flower in the crannied wall, I pluck you out of the crannies, I hold you here, root and all, in my hand, Little flower — but if I could understand what you are, root and all, all in all, I should know what God and man is." Perhaps Tennyson remembered something of a previous life in Ancient Egypt when he imbibed the secrets of Nature from the smiling lips of her wise men? We cannot know, but it seems possible that such inner knowledge follows us from life to life, as the Wise Men of Ancient Egypt taught, though we may not always be consciously aware of when or how we acquired such knowledge.
