Ancient Egyptian Flower Seller

Allegorical meaning of this painting

This painting depicts an ancient Egyptian Nobleman receiving a floral bouquet. Flowers had many symbolic meanings in ancient Egypt. The Sacred Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) was particularly venerated for its association with the God Nefer-Temu, who was said to have arisen from the primeval waters in the form of a Lotus flower. This allegory (which we also find in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, is much more than a charming story. For just as the Lotus rises from the mud to open its petals in the light of the Sun, so, too did the ancient Egyptians regard the Heart Soul of a human being, which they believed arose from the mud of material life, journeyed through the waters of earthly experience in its many incarnations, to finally blossom as a liberated "Horus Soul" in the Fields of Peace, or 'Sekhet-Hetepet'.

What a beautiful conception this is; so much nobler and more satisfying than the "last judgement" of dogmatic Christianity or the still grimmer extinction believed in by atheists! Sadly, the Blue Lotus has now all but disappeared from modern Egypt, almost as if it mourned the loss of the Great Ones who once walked upon the banks of the Holy Nile and stooped to meditate upon its fragile beauty.
